Nature Vs Nurture – Assignment written by Jessica Lovelock The Nature-Nurture debate has been scrutinised by psychologists for over a hundred years and, more recently, by biologists in the field of cognitive science. It inquires as to the influence of both ‘nature’; the hereditary present factors of a person determined by biological genetics; ‘Nurture’ is based on circumstance, the belief that the person we are is purely influenced by our environment, upbringing and circumstances that we encounter. This essay will cover both sides of the Nature vs Nurture debate while relating to behaviourism and criminal behaviour. ‘Criminal behaviour’ is a wide topic and encompasses many different types of behaviour and motivations/reasons for such; this essay will focus on criminal acts committed by those who suffer from a diagnosed mental health disorder, and consider the Nature-Nurture debate within this context. To simplify the nurture philosophy Aristotle believed and argued that we are all born with an empty mind, a blank canvas; he believed all behaviour and thoughts are due to experience.
